Cards That Earn Bonus Rewards On Every Dollar Spent

There are plenty of options for cards that earn bonus rewards for spending. These are cards that offer you either cash back or points on each purchase you make. Some of the most popular rewards credit cards will give you bonus points or bonus cash back. The Discover It, for example, offers bonus cash back on rotating categories. The idea of rotating categories is that the categories will switch quarterly. You will earn 5% cash back (or 5% points, depending on the card) for that quarter.

Popular categories for the bonus rotating categories include purchases made at gas stations, grocery stores, dining, online shopping, home improvement stores, and department stores. They can be anything that the credit card company chooses and thinks that their customers will enjoy. Typically there is a cap on the spending in the bonus categories. Going back to the Discover It example, it has a $1,500 spending cap for their rotating bonus categories.

Fixed bonus categories would refer to cards that offer bigger bonuses on certain categories all the time. For example, the Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard offers two points per dollar spent on all gas station, grocery store and utility purchases. This is offered year round with no spending cap. With no annual fee, cardholders get great rewards at a fixed rate all year long.

What if I don’t like rotating categories?

If rotating categories are not for you and you would prefer to get great rewards all year long on all purchases, you are in luck. We have put together a great list of options for you. Each of these cards offers greater than 1% cash back on all purchases. Take a look and see if any of them are right for you!

Citi Double Cash

There is no limit to the cash back that you can earn with this card.

You can also enjoy a 0% introductory APR for a limited time on all purchases and balance transfers made using the Capital One Quicksilver card. After the introductory period, the APR will be 12.9-22.9% on purchases and all balance transfers. Hyatt Visa Hotel Card from Chase Bank

For those who travel with a degree of frequency, having the right travel rewards credit card is a must. Watching frequent flyer miles, free or discounted hotel stays and travel necessity discounts rack up is part of the fun of hitting the road or the skies, but not all travel cards offer the same benefits. Some travel cards focus on a specific airline or hotel group alone, while others have partners that allow more robust rewards redemption options. The Hyatt Visa Hotel card offered through Chase Bank is a smart choice for travelers with a penchant for staying at the Hyatt when they get away.

Card Basics

The Hyatt Visa Hotel card from Chase Bank is a premiere travel card that gives the most bang for each buck in terms of rewards. For every dollar spent on purchases at Hyatt properties with the card, account holders earn three rewards points; for every dollar spent on purchases at restaurants, airline tickets bought directly from the airline or car rental agencies, two rewards points are earned. All other purchases made with the Hyatt Visa Hotel card earn account holders one rewards point per dollar spent. Like most rewards credit cards, one point is equal to $0.01, meaning 1,000 points translates to $10 in rewards.

For individuals new the Hyatt Visa Hotel card from Chase Bank, meaning they have no held the card in the previous 24 months, bonus offers are available for a limited time. First, account holders who spend no less than $1,000 on purchases within the first three months after account opening receive two free nights at participating Hyatt properties. On top of the bonus nights, cardholders who add an authorized user to the account within the first three months earn an additional 5,000 points. The added user must make a purchase during that time frame, however.

Rewards points earned by utilizing the Hyatt Visa Hotel credit card can only be redeemed for free nights at Hyatt properties. Cardholders must have accumulated a minimum of 5,000 rewards points before a free night can be obtained.

Additional Card Benefits

In addition to the rewards program built in to the Hyatt Visa Hotel card, cardholders have unique perks that come with card ownership. First and foremost, one free night at any Hyatt property that falls within the category range of 1 through 4 is obtained every year after the cardholder’s anniversary. Also, cardholders earn different statuses through the Hyatt Passport program which equates to even more perks. Accountholders in good standing can upgrade to the Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum membership category, and are able to maintain that status for as long as the card remains open. The Platinum status under the Hyatt rewards program includes a 15% rewards point bonus on eligible purchases, not to mention complimentary in-room Internet access, and late checkout upon request. All the benefits available through the Hyatt Passport program are detailed within the program’s membership agreement.

Card members can also move up the status ranks by utilizing the Hyatt Visa Hotel credit card on a consistent basis. Account holders receive two stay credits and five night credits toward the Elite Diamond status when $20,000 or more is spent in each calendar year. An additional three stay credits and five night credits can be earned when $40,000 or more is spent throughout the year. These added credits lead to free nights quickly, making the card an attractive solution for those who regularly stay with Hyatt properties when traveling.

Card Member Costs

As with most travel rewards credit cards, the Hyatt Visa Hotel card comes with card member fees that should be reviewed prior to applying for and subsequently utilizing the card. First, an annual fee of $75 is charged each card member anniversary, although for new card members, the annual fee is waived for the first year. The Hyatt Visa is reserved for applicants with exemplary credit, as only one purchase APR is assigned at the time the card is opened to qualified borrowers. The initial interest rate is 16.24% for purchases, but it is tied to the Prime Rate and may fluctuate over time. Balance transfers receive the same APR as purchases, and no promotional interest rate is available at this time.

Cash advances cost card members more than purchases or balance transfers, with a standing APR of 25.24%. Currently, fees associated with cash advances or balance transfers are not available, nor are charges assessed for late payments or returned payments. International travelers or shoppers do not have to worry about additional charges with the Hyatt Visa Hotel credit card, as no foreign transaction fees are imposed.

Final Thoughts

As a travel rewards credit card, the Hyatt Visa Hotel card is a smart choice for individuals who plan to stay in Hyatt properties either domestically or during international travel. The bonus nights earned through the current promotion are available at a relatively low spending barrier within the first three months, and the bump to Diamond status through the Hyatt Passport rewards program is attractive to frequent travelers. The authorized user bonus rewards offer and the anniversary free night stay also adds to the overall benefit of carrying the card.

Hyatt Visa Hotel credit card members have the added benefit of earning rewards on more than just hotel stays. Enhanced rewards points earning potential with certain categories helps account holders earn more nights quickly, as does the standard one rewards point for all other purchases that fall outside the confines of bonus categories. Having the ability to utilize the card for everyday purchases without foreign transaction fees, and the ability to redeem rewards with as few as 1,000 points accumulated help make this card a strong contender in the travel category. The waived annual fee for the first year and comparably low annual fee of $75 thereafter doesn’t hurt either.

Individuals who do not travel often, or those who prefer to stay at hotels ore resorts not associated with Hyatt property management will want to select a different travel rewards card for their wallets. The Hyatt Visa Hotel credit card is best suited for travelers who spend quite a bit on hotel stays with Hyatt throughout the year.

There’s no capping on the reward points you can earn with your Marriott Premier Hotel credit card. The more you spend with the card, the more reward points you accumulate!

The Shortfalls

Steep Annual Fee

Who likes paying an annual fee on their cards?! No one! Although the $85 annual fee on this card is a put-off for many, the rewards and free annual stays you get with this card more than make up for the fee.

Delay in accrual of rewards

It takes anywhere around 6-8 weeks for the rewards, bonus points and certificates to get added to your account. So, you don’t get them instantly after making your purchase/s and need to plan ahead – something that may not be possible for everyone.

Not for someone who doesn’t stay at Marriott often

This card is not for travelers who don’t wish to redeem their points for Marriott stays. You may want to look at other travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

The Bottom Line

Do you stay at Marriott properties frequently and are also enrolled into their Rewards program? Then it’s a no-brainer that you must apply for the Marriott Premier Hotel credit card too, and take your Marriott rewards’ earnings to an altogether new high!

This is by far the best travel card for Marriott loyalists. It gives you loads of benefits at a relatively low $85 annual fee. Not only do you save on your hotel stays, you enjoy various perks that come with the Elite status. Leaving everything aside, the highlight is – this bad boy is made of Pure Metal! Who wouldn’t want it considering that it costs you almost $5,000 less than the American Express ‘Black Card’?!

One of the more popular hotel rewards cards, the Marriott Rewards Premier Card, is well known for allowing you to earn great rewards that can be redeemed at Marriott hotels and resorts around the world. This card is a step up from the standard Marriott Rewards credit card, and one you might consider. Especially since the sign-up bonus was recently increased to 70,000 points for a limited time. Let’s review the limited time offer as well as some of the great features of this card to help you decide if it’s the one for you!

No Annual Fee for the First Year

The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit card usually has an annual fee if $85, but it is waived for the first year and you pay nothing!

Huge Bonus Points!

For a limited time, you can earn a huge bonus of 70,000 points after spending only $2,000 in the first three months that you have the card. This is a huge reward, one that can get you rewards of up to 9 nights in certain Marriott hotels, specifically category 1 sites. The standard Marriott Rewards card gives you only 30,000 points as the bonus, which is still a great reward worth up to 4 nights.

Free Hotel Stay

Upon opening your Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card, you will get an immediate reward of one free night at eligible hotels worldwide, ranging from category 1-4. When you combine this bonus with the bonus points, you can actually earn up to 10 free nights, just by opening the account and spending what is really a minimal amount in the first three months! You only have 6 months after the date of issue to use your free hotel stay, so pay attention to the expiration date and make sure to take advantage of it.

Earn a free night each year on your anniversary, good at a category 1-5 Marriott location with the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card. This is a big perk, and is well worth the annual fee alone!

Keep Earning Bonus Rewards

Earn one free Elite category night for every $3,000 you spend. These Elite certificates continue to accumulate for each $3,000 you spend and there is no limit. You will become either a Gold, Silver or Platinum Elite member, which will allow you various perks at Marriott locations. Each year on your anniversary, you will earn an additional 15 Elite nights that can be used at Marriott locations around the world. The standard Marriott Rewards card gives you 10 Elite nights per year on your anniversary.

Extra Earning Power at Marriott Locations

For every dollar you spend at Marriott locations using your Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card you will earn 5 points. The standard Marriott Rewards card gives you 3 points for every Marriott dollar spent.

Great Standard Rewards Points

You will earn one point for every dollar you spend using the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card on all of your regular purchases, and two points for every dollar spent on travel, dining, airfare and car rentals. This double point earning potential, combined with the super bonus with any Marriott spending helps you to build up points quickly. The standard Marriott Rewards card does not offer the double points on travel spending. There is no limit to the number of points that you can earn with this card.

Easy to Redeem for Hotel Stays or Airfare

The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card makes it easy for you to redeem your points for hotel stays at Marriott and Ritz-Carlton locations. You can also use your points at the SkyMall online portal. If you prefer, redeem your points for car rentals, cruises or other benefits.

Chip and Signature Technology

The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card has chip and signature technology, which is the latest credit card security feature and offers you terrific protection from fraud. Only you can use the credit card.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Because Marriott locations are all around the world, you want to be able to use this card everywhere you go. There are no foreign transaction fees, which helps keep costs of using this card outside of the country low.

Is This the Card for You?

We think this card is great for Marriott lovers. Sure, it does have an annual fee, but this really pays for itself many times over with the tons of free nights that you can get.  This card does commit you to the Marriott chain or Ritz-Carlton chain, but these hotels are in most places now.

Overall, this card has a lot of great perks, but just not a lot of flexibility when it comes to where you can use your rewards if you don’t want to stay at a Marriott location. Marriott does give you the option of hotel+air packages for flights and hotels, which you can view here, as well as the option to transfer your points to many airlines. However, the transfer rate isn’t the best, so we don’t suggest using your Marriott points this way.

For those looking for more flexible travel rewards, consider a card that earns transferable points, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which can be transferred to 11 Ultimate Rewards travel partners. Or for those who want the simple earning and travel redemptions, consider the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard®, which earns 2 points per dollar that can be redeemed for any travel expense!
